Course Description :

In this era, the performing arts of wayang in Java and East Asia are no longer in demand by the younger generation. This course will focus on 3D Javanese puppets, such as Potehi (glove puppets) & Golek puppets. In Java, the two puppets are almost extinct. Bunraku in Japan, Namsadang in Korea, Budaixi in China experienced the same thing.

The scope of the study material is the understanding of wayang in general in Java (types of wayang in Java & East Asia, the function and purpose of wayang), the meaning of wayang Potehi, performance venues, musical accompaniment, legends/myths as material for wayang stories, the art of wayang Potehi performances (puppeteers, magicians, musicians, musical instruments, puppets), Potehi's development from time to time, Potehi puppet group, Potehi's creativity and innovation, Potehi's workshop.

This course is delivered online in a synchronous manner.

Intended Audience

General Public: Academic University Level, Non-Formal education level, Artist from Art Performance. The class of Wayang used an English Language.

Learning Objectives

Getting to know & re-understand the types of 3-dimensional wayang, such as the almost extinct Potehi Wayang, get to know & understand the diversity of wayang culture in Java and East Asia, and build tolerance between nations.

Learning activities in this course could be used by watch learning video, reading learning materials, quizzes, discussion by chat.

Dwi Woro Retno Mastuti, M.HUM

Lecturer at the Javanese Studies Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of Indonesia and has conducted cultural research on ancient manuscripts (Old Javanese, Classical Javanese, Javanese-Chinese) and Peranakan Chinese culture in Indonesia.

Member of the Board of Experts of ASPERTINA (Indonesian Peranakan Chinese Association), member of ATL (Oral Tradition Association) and initiated the establishment of Wayang Rumah Cinta Cultural Studio (2014-present).
